Sad news to share...

On July 27th at 2:30pm in Estes Park, CO, Heather and I were enjoying our first few licks of our Dairy Queen ice cream cones as we walked down the sidewalk. As we approached a crosswalk, an elderly couple driving a Suburu Outback kindly stopped for us. As we made our way into the street (in front of the stopped car), suddenly I heard a loud collision immediately followed by Heather getting hit and pushed back 5ft onto the asphalt. The car that stopped for us was rear-ended by another car traveling 15-20 mph.  That driver was charged with careless driving and causing serious bodily injury.  To share my emotions with you, I am on the verge of tears am am shaking as I rewrite this moment I experienced. She was hit at her left knee shoving her back. As she was being thrown to the ground, she put her right arm down (instinct) thus causing a break/fracture to her right wrist. The blow that she took to her knee caused an ACL (Anterior Crucial Ligament) tear in that knee that will require surgery.
As you have noticed, I have only spoken and thought of my wife to this point as I did in the moment at the scene. BUT, as her beautiful instinct kicked in, the first thing I heard her saying as she was lying on the street was, "Jesus, Please protect the baby. Jesus, please protect the baby." Priority for me was my wife. Priority for her was Baby Camping. WOW! So, to address the status on the little one.... He was examined right away with a stethoscope on the scene and then an ultrasound in the ER. Things checked out great....155 BPM with that strong little heart of his, and he hasn't stopped kicking and letting himself be known to us. He is doing very well, although a bit sad and worried for his mommy.
Today, unfortunately, we did find out that she also fractured her tibia in her left leg and will see the doctor tomorrow (Wednesday) to determine whether she will need pins inserted through surgery or just casted.
Given the circumstances, we are extremely thankful that her injuries weren't more extensive. May I ask one more request? Please pray for emotional and physical healing for Heather and baby. Pray that all the details with the upcoming school year can be worked out for Heather and that we, together, can work through the logistics of daily routine...showering, going to the bathroom, sleeping, walking, and even moving around. Thank you all for your prayers, love, flowers and calls! I'll do my best to update this:) Love you all, D & Ha
